Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide services
In-Person?

I provide virtual therapy for all residents of Ontario and am now offering in-person sessions in the King West, Liberty Village, and Fort York areas for Walk+Talk park sessions.

Are you covered by insurance?

Many extended health insurance plans cover therapy with a Registered Social Worker, but coverage varies - it’s best to check directly with your provider. Sitting with Laura Therapy does not offer direct billing at this time. After each session, you'll receive an invoice that you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement, similar to how you would for services like physiotherapy or massage therapy.

What is the difference between a Social Worker and Psychotherapist?

Both Social Workers and Psychotherapists in Ontario are authorized to provide psychotherapy, though they are regulated by different professional colleges. The pathways to becoming a practicing therapist vary in terms of education, clinical training, and regulatory requirements. Social Workers are governed by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), which has been in place longer than the college for Psychotherapists. As a result, many insurance providers are more familiar with and more likely to cover services offered by Registered Social Workers.

What is Walk + Talk Therapy?

At Sitting with Laura, sitting doesn’t always mean staying still. Walk + Talk therapy is a form of psychotherapy that takes our conversations outside -combining movement, fresh air, and nature with the therapeutic process. This approach can be especially helpful for those who feel more at ease talking while walking, or who find that movement helps ease anxiety, rumination, or feeling stuck.

I offer Walk + Talk sessions during the warmer months, and continue to provide virtual therapy.

Do you charge HST?

No, Registered Social Workers in Ontario are exempt from charging GST or HST on psychotherapy services. This is one of the financial advantages of receiving therapy from a Social Worker.

How long should we meet? How long will it take me to heal?

Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and the frequency and duration of our work together will depend on your unique needs, goals, schedule, and resources. In our first session, we’ll talk about what feels manageable and meaningful for you. Many people begin with weekly or biweekly sessions to build momentum, while others find monthly or occasional check-ins helpful for maintaining progress and supporting ongoing self-reflection. You're never locked into a rigid plan — we’ll revisit what’s working and adjust as your needs evolve.
